About the host

A regional group, operating in Phnom Penh

RMA (Cambodia) Plc. is the Cambodian arm of the RMA Group, a diversified business operating across Asia. In Cambodia the company represents international vehicle brands and supports them through the full chain that follows a sale β€” parts supply, authorised servicing, workshops and after-sales support β€” alongside its other lines of business. It is the practical end of a distribution network, run from an office and service operation in Phnom Penh.

For an SCA audience the value of the visit was in seeing how an organisation of this kind is actually staffed and run: how the departments fit together, how people are recruited and developed, and what the company expects from someone joining it in their first year.

The case interview

Four things our students asked the HR Manager about

01
Operations

How the business is organised day to day, which functions sit under one roof, and how the departments hand work to one another from customer enquiry through to after-sales service.

02
Human resource practices

How the HR team recruits and selects candidates, what the interview stages look like, and which qualities carry weight when the company assesses an entry-level applicant.

03
Career development

Where a graduate can start, how roles grow with training and experience, and what the company looks for when it promotes people from within its own teams.

04
Technology and innovation

How the company uses systems and new tools to work more efficiently, and what that means for the skills a young engineer is expected to bring with them.

The interview was held in the company’s meeting room, with students putting their questions directly to Mr. Sun Chhin and following up on his answers. Meeting the person who does the hiring β€” rather than reading a job advertisement β€” gave the group a clearer picture of what the industry actually asks for.

On the wall behind him hangs the company’s ambition statement: to be the market leader for every product it represents, to be the benchmark for other RMA Group companies on all KPIs, to be the group’s role model, and to be the best place to work. Seeing those four lines set out in the room where the interview took place made the point that culture and performance targets are written down and used, not left implicit.

Key takeaways

What the students were told to work on

Adapt, and keep learning

Develop strong adaptability and the habit of continuous learning. The business environment changes faster than any single course can cover, and the people who stay useful are the ones who keep picking up what is new.

Communicate and work as a team

Build professional communication and teamwork skills. Work moves between departments through people, and effective collaboration inside an organisation depends on how clearly those handovers are made.

Hold your integrity and commitment

Maintain integrity, responsibility and commitment. These are the qualities the company weighs most heavily for long-term career growth β€” they are what a promotion is decided on once the technical ability is taken for granted.

Embrace technology and innovation

Take up technology and look for better ways to do the work. Improving efficiency is expected of everyone, not only of managers, and it is how a young employee contributes to the development of the business.

Appreciation

On behalf of SCA, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Sun Chhin for his warm welcome and for sharing valuable knowledge, career advice and practical business insight with our students.
