Case Interview at PCL Logistics Co., Ltd.

Students from Automation & Supply Chain Systems Engineering visited PCL Logistics Co., Ltd and interviewed founder and Managing Director Mr. Khieng Siekmeng. The conversation covered how a Cambodian-owned freight forwarder finds room to compete beside the global logistics giants, how it reaches customers overseas, and how it is putting digital systems into an operation that runs on paperwork and handovers.

About the host

A Cambodian freight forwarder in a market of global names

PCL Logistics Co., Ltd is a locally founded freight forwarding and logistics company based in Phnom Penh. It moves goods for Cambodian shippers by sea and by air, and handles the customs work and documentation that sit around every shipment β€” the same operational chain our students meet in the classroom, run here by a company competing directly with far larger international operators.

What made the visit useful for an SCA audience was the vantage point. Speaking with the founder rather than a department meant the group heard how the business was positioned in the first place: which customers a smaller forwarder can serve better than a giant can, and what has to be built β€” networks, systems, people β€” before that position holds.

The case interview

Four things our students asked the founder about

01
Competing against the giants

How a locally owned forwarder finds the customers and trade lanes the large international operators serve poorly, and builds its position there rather than competing head-on.

02
Reaching customers overseas

Why membership of freight forwarding associations matters, and how those networks bring in agents, partners and volume from markets the company has no office in.

03
Digitalising the operation

How the company is introducing digital systems step by step, and what that has done to the errors and delays that used to appear when work passed between departments.

04
The founder’s own path

Mr. Khieng Siekmeng’s professional background before starting the company, and the real-world experience behind the decisions that shaped PCL Logistics.

Around the table with the Managing Director

The interview was held in the company’s meeting room, with students putting their questions directly to Mr. Khieng Siekmeng and following up on the answers as the discussion moved from strategy to day-to-day operations. Hearing a founder explain the reasoning behind each decision β€” and the mistakes that preceded it β€” gave the group a far clearer view of the industry than a company profile could.

Key takeaways

Three lessons the students took away

Target the gaps in the market

A smaller company does not beat an established global operator on scale or price. It competes by finding the segments, lanes and service needs the giants cover poorly, and serving those well.

Build international networks deliberately

Joining freight forwarding associations is how a Cambodian company secures global trade volume without opening offices abroad. The network is the sales channel, and membership has to be worked, not merely held.

Adopt digital systems gradually

Digitalisation was introduced step by step rather than all at once. Done that way it cuts the errors that appear when work crosses between departments, and keeps communication consistent as volume grows.

Appreciation

On behalf of SCA, we would like to express our sincere thanks to Mr. Khieng Siekmeng for his warm welcome and for sharing his valuable industry knowledge, his professional background and his real-world experience of running a logistics business.
