Case Interview

About the host

A fibre-optic OEM plant, five years old

WCFO (Cambodia) Co., Ltd was established in 2020 as a wholly China-owned enterprise. It operates as an OEM manufacturer, producing mainly fibre optic products to the designs and specifications of the companies that buy them. That ownership and business model is what makes the plant interesting to an ASCSE audience. An OEM does not sell under its own name; it competes on cost, quality and delivery against a specification it did not write. Everything that follows from that how people are recruited, trained and paid, and how the floor is kept to an auditable standard was the subject of the interview.

Observations

Four things the interview surfaced

01
An OEM, not a brand
WCFO makes fibre optic products to its customers’ specifications. The plant does not own the design or the market β€” it owns the process of making the thing correctly, on time and at the agreed cost.
02
Training is the entry route
Employee training was one of the clearest practical insights of the visit. New staff are brought up to the required standard on site rather than hired ready-made β€” a deliberate answer to a shallow local talent pool.
03
Bonuses tied to overtime
Compensation at the plant includes an overtime-based bonus scheme. Pay is therefore linked to hours worked beyond the standard shift β€” a direct lever on output, and one with real consequences for scheduling and retention.
04
Foreign ownership, local workforce
A 100% China-owned firm running a Cambodian workforce has to bridge language, expectation and working practice every day. That gap is exactly what Mr. Wan Chao’s advice to students addresses.

The interview and the plant

The visit took the form of a case interview in the plant’s meeting room, with Mr. Wan Chao answering questions on how the business is run and how its people are recruited, trained, paid and retained. Students changed into shoe covers before going beyond the lobby β€” the plant’s cleanliness rules apply to guests as they do to staff. At the close, SCA presented a certificate of appreciation to the management team.

Takeaways

Advice for students, from the General Manager

Build strong knowledge in your major. Depth in your own field is what an employer cannot train into you quickly. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

Keep learning and improving. A plant that trains its own people values those who continue to train themselves. What you know on the day you are hired is a starting point, not a qualification.

Develop skills, language and professional attitude. In a foreign-owned factory, language and conduct are not extras β€” they are how technical ability actually reaches the work.
