STEAM Tuition Center

Students from Automation & Supply Chain Systems Engineering visited STEAM Tuition Center in Phnom Penh to see how a private learning centre is organised and run — from its teaching team and course catalogue to the way it prepares Cambodian pupils for international mathematics and science competitions.

About the host

A neighbourhood centre for science and mathematics

STEAM Tuition Center — STC — is a private tutoring centre on Street 596 in Sangkat Boeng Kak Ti Muoy, Khan Toul Kork, Phnom Penh. It teaches the core science stream to pupils in grades 9 through 12, and its name spells out the subjects it is built around: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The centre’s motto, printed across its signboard, reads “Trust · Competence · Good conduct.”

For an ASCSE audience the interest is less in the syllabus than in the operation behind it: a small organisation that has to schedule classes, staff them, recruit students and hold quality steady across a dozen teachers — the same coordination problem, at a smaller scale, that our students study in production and service systems.

Observations

Four things the visit surfaced

01
A narrow, deliberate catalogue
Five subjects only — mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and Khmer literature — taught across grades 9 to 12. The centre competes on depth in the examinable core rather than on breadth.
02
A competition pathway
Alongside the school syllabus, STC runs preparation classes for international mathematics contests — WMI, AMO, SASMO and SUKEN — giving stronger pupils a route beyond the national curriculum.
03
A named teaching team
Twelve teachers are listed on the public information board with their photograph and subject. Naming staff openly is a trust signal — and a commitment the centre then has to staff against.
04
Low-friction enrolment
Two phone lines, a Facebook page, a Telegram channel and QR codes on the board. Enquiry to enrolment is a single message, with a standing discount advertised for pupils taking several subjects.

The briefing and the information board

The visit opened with a briefing in the centre’s meeting room, where staff walked the group through how the timetable is put together, how teachers are assigned to subjects and year groups, and how the centre keeps in touch with parents. Students then examined the public information board at the entrance, which doubles as the centre’s prospectus and its price list.

Takeaways

Why this matters to an engineering student

Capacity is the binding constraint. Rooms, hours and teachers are all fixed in the short run. Every extra class the centre opens has to fit inside the same building and the same evenings — a scheduling problem our students meet again in production planning.

Demand is seasonal and predictable. Enrolment tracks the school calendar and peaks ahead of the grade 12 examination. A service business that can forecast its own peak can staff for it — and that forecast is the same kind of exercise as a demand plan.

Reputation is the distribution channel. With no sales force, the centre grows on results and word of mouth. Quality is not a department here; it is the marketing budget.
