Firm Visit

Vongchan Cable Co., Ltd.

Students from the Bachelor’s program in Business and Supply Chain Analytics Engineering visited Vongchan Cable Co., Ltd. During the visit, our students had the opportunity to learn about the cable production process, starting from raw materials (RM) through to finished goods (FG) ready for sale in the market.

Firm Visit Manufacturing & Supply Chain
About the host

A cable plant that runs from raw material to finished goods

Vongchan Cable Co., Ltd. — VCC — manufactures electrical cable in Cambodia, with its drums marked “Made in Cambodia” alongside the conductor size, voltage rating, length and weight of each reel. The plant takes in raw conductor and insulating material and sends out sealed, labelled drums of finished cable ready for the market.

For a supply chain audience the appeal of the site is that the whole chain is visible in one building. Raw materials, work in progress and finished goods each occupy their own part of the floor, and a single product can be followed end to end — from the material as it arrives to the drum as it is staged for despatch.

Observations

Four things the visit surfaced

01
RM to FG on one site
The production process runs from raw materials through to finished goods without leaving the plant. Students could walk the sequence in the order the product actually travels rather than infer it from a diagram.
02
The drum is the unit of everything
Finished cable is wound onto wooden drums stencilled with description, length, net and gross weight and lot number. The drum is simultaneously the packaging, the handling unit and the inventory record.
03
Traceability written on the product
Every reel carries its own lot number and specification in the open. Quality and despatch decisions are made against markings that stay with the goods all the way to the customer.
04
Safety framed the whole visit
High-visibility vests and hard hats were issued before the group entered, and movement on the floor followed set routes. Safety is not an add-on to the process here — it is part of how the floor is laid out.

The briefing and the production floor

The visit opened with a company presentation in the meeting room, covering what VCC makes, how the plant is organised and the specifications its cable is built to. The group then moved onto the production floor in small clusters, stopping at each station while company staff explained what the machine does and where its output goes next — which made the line readable as one continuous flow rather than a set of separate operations.

Takeaways

Why this matters to an engineering student

RM, WIP and FG are places before they are numbers. On a balance sheet these are three lines of inventory. On the floor they are three physical areas with different handling, different space needs and different risks. Seeing them laid out makes the accounting categories concrete.

Continuous product, discrete packaging. Cable is produced as a continuous length but sold in fixed drum lengths. Where the line cuts and winds is a planning decision that ties production directly to the order book — cut wrong and you hold stock nobody ordered.

Local manufacturing shortens the chain. Cable made in Cambodia for Cambodian customers removes an import leg, its lead time and its currency exposure. The same product decision that reads as marketing on the drum reads as risk management in the supply chain.
