Congratulations

From Cambodian trading firms to the IEEE record

Chheng Sovannarith, a student of the Department of Automation & Supply Chain Systems Engineering, presented this work at the 4th IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society Conference: Asia-Pacific (TEMSCON-ASPAC 2025), held from 14 to 16 September 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The paper was presented as Paper 43 in Track 4 — Entrepreneurship, Business Models and SocioEconomic Impacts, and the full text has since been indexed on IEEE Xplore, placing the work of an ASCSE student alongside research from universities across the Asia-Pacific region.

About the Study

What makes people perform in a trading firm

The paper examines how Human Resource Management (HRM) practice affects employee performance and business growth in Cambodian trading firms, and builds an HRM framework for recruitment and selection, training and development, keeping and compensation. It draws on in-depth interviews with HR managers and executives from three trading firms of different sizes, then compares the practices across the cases.

01
Recruitment & selection
Firms advertise on social media, engage agencies, request referrals and attract recruits through career exhibitions, then shortlist and interview — with the CEO, general manager or head of division negotiating salaries.
02
Training & development
Staff training run with head divisions, a three-month probation period, monthly meetings with the sales team, morning meetings to lift spirits, and outside experts invited in to train soft skills.
03
Retention & compensation
Evaluation against KPIs and sales performance, staff recognition, petty cash and annual staff parties, birthday celebrations, and incentives in the form of insurance and bonus salary.
Key takeaway

Systematized recruitment, performance assessment and employee training courses are the key factors behind employee satisfaction, retention and business success. The study recommends centralised HRM update resources, reasonable gestation periods for new procedures, and better HRM advisory services for small and medium-sized enterprises.
