Straight from the MOU into the classroom: two days hands-on with Odoo

Right after officially signing the MOU with Odoo HK Limited, the Department of Supply Chain and Automation Engineering (SCA) jumped straight into a 2-day Teacher Academic Training — two full days, 25–26 April 2026, spent hands-on with the six tool groups our students will meet in industry.

The Training

Two full days on the tools the firms actually run

After the Royal University of Phnom Penh officially signed its Memorandum of Understanding with Odoo HK Limited, the Department of Supply Chain and Automation Engineering did not wait for the next semester to put it to use — it went straight into a 2-day Teacher Academic Training.

Our faculty members spent two full days, 25–26 April 2026, getting hands-on with six groups of tools offered by Odoo: Purchase & Inventory, CRM & Sales, Website & E-commerce, PoS Shop, Manufacturing & Shop Floor, and Accounting. The exercise throughout was the same one a company faces: take a conventional business and transform and digitalise it, module by module.

The two days also introduced the “Scale Up!” business game — a simulation that shows how the parts of a business work together in real life, rather than as six separate screens.

What We Trained On

Six tool groups, one business end to end

Odoo is a single suite of connected business applications, so the modules were not taught in isolation: an order raised in one becomes stock movement, a production order and a journal entry in the next. Over the two days the faculty worked through six of them.

01
Purchase & Inventory
Requests for quotation, purchase orders, receipts and stock moves — the upstream half of the supply chain our programme teaches, run on a live database.
02
CRM & Sales
Leads and opportunities through to quotations and confirmed sales orders — and how a customer record becomes demand the rest of the system has to serve.
03
Website & E-commerce
Building an online storefront whose catalogue, pricing and stock are the same records the back office works from — digitalising the sales channel itself.
04
PoS Shop
Point of Sale for a physical shop — sessions, payments and closing the till, with every sale writing straight back to inventory and accounting.
05
Manufacturing & Shop Floor
Bills of materials, work centres, manufacturing orders and the shop-floor view — the automation-and-production side of the department’s teaching, in software.
06
Accounting
Invoicing, bills and reconciliation — where every operation from the five modules above finally lands, and where a digitalised business is measured.

Beyond the Software

“Scale Up!” — seeing a business as one system

Alongside the modules, the faculty got to know “Scale Up!”, the Odoo business game. Teams run a company across purchasing, sales, production and finance at once and watch the consequences travel: a decision taken in one function shows up as a shortage, a cash problem or a missed order in another.

That is the lesson a module-by-module course cannot teach on its own — how the functions of a business work together in real life. It is also, for a supply chain and automation programme, exactly the systems view we want students to carry into industry.

Why It Matters

The 10/20/70 rule, applied to our own teaching

This is a huge milestone for our programme in applying the 10/20/70 rule for teaching and learning — roughly a tenth of what a person learns comes from formal instruction, a fifth from other people, and the rest from doing the work. Training the lecturers first is what makes the last seventy per cent possible in class.

Key takeaway

We do not just teach the theory. We offer our students the opportunity to get hands-on practice on real-world tools — the same ones being used by firms today.

At the Close

Certified, and ready to take it into class

Participating lecturers completed the two days with an Odoo certificate — and with a set of “Scale Up!” game kits to bring the same experience back to their students.
