Perceiving and deciding: SCA students and lecturers explore S–N and T–F preferences with Brighton Academy

On 12 August 2026, students and lecturers from the Department of Supply Chain and Automation Engineering (SCA) gathered for the 2nd session of the MBTI Training Workshop with Brighton Academy — exploring Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N) and Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F) personality preferences to enhance communication and teamwork.

The Workshop

Exploring how we take in information and make decisions

On 12 August 2026, students and lecturers from the Department of Supply Chain and Automation Engineering (SCA) had the valuable opportunity to attend the second session of the insightful MBTI Training Workshop, led by our honourable guest from Brighton Academy.

Following the foundational personality assessment of Day 1, this session guided participants through the cognitive preference pairs of the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) — with a focused exploration on Sensing (S) and Intuition (N) for receiving information, as well as Thinking (T) and Feeling (F) for making decisions.

Through interactive activities and discussions, participants learned how to adapt their communication styles, understand others better, and improve teamwork — building practical synergy across engineering projects and academic collaborations.

What the Session Covered

From preference pairs to team synergy

The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator pairs highlight how differing cognitive functions complement one another. The second session focused on turning self-awareness into active collaboration by examining the core dichotomies that govern how we perceive information and make decisions.

01
Receiving information: Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
Understanding how Sensing preferences focus on concrete facts, sequential details, and present realities, while Intuitive preferences explore big-picture patterns, possibilities, and future innovations.
02
Making decisions: Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
Exploring how Thinking preferences apply objective logic, consistency, and principle-based analysis, while Feeling preferences prioritize personal values, empathy, and the human impact of decisions.
03
Communication & teamwork synergy
Learning how to adapt communication styles to bridge differences between types, resolve misunderstandings, and leverage complementary strengths in multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Key takeaway

Effective engineering requires both precision in the details (S) and vision for the whole (N), paired with rigorous objective logic (T) and deep consideration for people (F). Embracing and balancing all four preferences is what turns a group of individuals into a high-performing team.

Interactive Learning

Hands-on collaboration on the floor

Breaking away from traditional classroom seating, students and lecturers sat together in circles on the floor to map out personality quadrants (ST, NT, SF, NF) on chart paper, creating an open and engaging environment for genuine discussion.
