Program Details

Lecture: Mobile Communication and Mobile Computing

The lecture gives an introduction into the principles of mobile communication. It illustrates the basic concepts of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) and its extensions. Moreover, UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), wireless local area networks and emerging 4th generation mobile networks are also discussed. On top of these, internet protocols for mobile environments such as mobile IP and TCP are present, and mobile web application support is discussed. Moreover, various mobile application platforms and product categories from areas such as databases, file systems, mail systems, and specific application domains are outlined.

Research overview talk: Networking and distributed systems research at Technische Universität Dresden, Germany

The talk presents current projects and research results of the networking and distributed systems research group at Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. A major focus area is cloud computing and service oriented architectures. It is pointed out how trusted and reliable cloud platforms can be supported and how business processes can efficiently be implemented on top of service architectures. Moreover, additional project results on internet information retrieval and semantic web technologies are also discussed with applications such as product data management and social software. Finally, accompanying research work from the area of network design and multimedia collaboration is presented within an outlook. Over all, the relationship with topics of the ongoing Master's program on Information Technology at RUPP is emphasized, too.

Biography

Prof Dr. Alexander Schill’s major research interests are distributed systems and middleware, high performance communication and multimedia, and advanced teleservices such as teleteaching and teleworking. He holds a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and received a Dr.h.c. from University National of Asuncion, Paraguay.

Prof. Schill also worked with the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, and has been involved in various industry cooperations. He is the author or co-author of a large number of publications on computer networking, including several books.
