Course Description
Khmer for Foreigners: Level I
This introductory course introduces students to basic reading and conversation skills in Khmer. Students learn to read consonants, vowels, recognize the feet of consonants, punctuation, symbols, independent vowels and subscripts. Topic of conversation include introductions; personal biographies including name, nationality, date of birth, place of birth, job, and address; shopping for fruits, vegetables, meats, spices and clothes; asking favors; time; family, comparisons and colors. Textbooks used in this course are Khmer Literature for Foreigners- Book 1 (Souer Kethya) and We Learn Khmer (Souer Kethya, Soeung Phos and Prum Sisaphantha).
Khmer for Foreigners: Level II
In this level, students review their knowledge of consonants, vowels and consonant feet, and learn to construct written sentences. Topics covered include shopping; going to restaurants; going to the post-office; family; school; housework; and seeing a doctor. Textbooks used in this course are Khmer Language (Nguon Phan and Monh Sary) and We Learn Khmer (Souer Kethya, Soeung Phos and Prum Sisaphantha).
Khmer for Foreigners: Level III
This level further builds students' vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar. Topics include: going to the bookshop; making appointments; the weather; shopping; meeting at the airport; asking for information; interviewing; greeting; talking about your family; writing greeting cards and writing letters. Students also read Khmer stories and legends, such as The Glasses Seller and the Ignorant Man and The Judicial Hare. The textbook used in this course is We Learn Khmer (Souer Kethya, Soeung Phos and Prum Sisaphantha).
Khmer for Foreigners: Level IV
This course builds students' vocabulary, comprehension, grammar and knowledge of Khmer culture and literature. Topics include streets of Phnom Penh; traveling in Cambodia; the countryside; names and birthdays; politeness; restaurants and markets; mealtimes and food; hospital and medical treatment; geography; people and plants; marriage and family; and the history and characteristics of Khmer letters. Students learn about Khmer festivals, including Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben, the celebration of the dead. Students also read stories such as The History of the Name "Phnom Penh", Dharmabalkumara, and The Story of Lime, Betel and Betel Nut. The textbook used in this course is We Learn Khmer (Souer Kethya, Soeung Phos and Prum Sisaphantha).
