Project Description
The project entitled "Training and capacity building to utilize groundwater resources in the arsenic affected areas of Cambodia" aims to establish an academic and research collaboration between Queen's University Belfast (QUB) and Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) for technological improvement in managing groundwater resources in arsenic affected areas in Cambodia. The main focus of this initiative will be on capacity building and enhancing the cooperation in science and technology for sustainable use of groundwater resources in the arsenic affected areas of Kandal Province. This goal will be achieved by sharing the knowledge and expertise of the UK and Cambodian institutions and absorption of new technologies and knowledge.
The project would also address the following aspects the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) as following:- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger -by increasing cash crop production in dry months using decontaminated groundwater.
- Reduce child mortality -by reducing exposure of infants to arsenic laced water
- Improve maternal health -by reducing consumption of contaminated water and food
- Ensure environmental sustainability -in situ removal of arsenic from groundwater, without any chemicals or waste formation.
Furthermore, both partners will engage in curriculum development in environmental science and engineering at RUPP and running training courses for students, researchers and community workers on sustainable use of groundwater.
